I probably shouldn't write this, but I felt the need to...

RE: Prodigy and his complaint

1) The hack, as far as I can see, happened on Oct 9 around 9-10am ET - assuming this as my forum was hammered by around 40 bots during that time but thankfully they didn't cause any harm - probably because my forum software was updated, so your Oct 10 DB was probably ruined by then.

2) Your data loss may have been your fault. Your SQL software, assuming forum software, probably has an exploit - is your software up to date?

3) Storing a backup on the same machine as the data itself is useless. Hardware failure can happen at any time to anyone. Even you said you lost your local data.

4) Most sharred servers don't backup data at all, it is up to you to do it. OSHS provides GREAT service, especially for the price they charge. Blaming them isn't fair.

5) The more important it is, the more often you should save a copy of it and the more places you should store that copy. Backup the DB daily. Store one copy on a USB thumb drive, cheap these days, and store a copy on your gmail account - tons of space provided there.

You can even create a PHP script to automagically backup your DB and email it to your gmail account daily using a CRON job.

So, I thank OSHS for their service through this difficult time. Keep in mind nobody or no hosting company is perfect, they all will experience problems from time to time. Afterall, they don't write the software or build the hardware. They somehow manage to put it all together for us to use. If it's so easy then maybe we should do it ourselves so we can't blame them.

Hacked Servers Update

Dear Customer,

Please be aware that a number of our servers have been victim to an advanced hacking technique, which has resulted in a number of webpages being replaced by the hacker group's protest page, with a further possible escalation of privileges on some servers.

Hence whilst we can restore websites from our backups and try and patch up existing servers, it is far more prudent to start with fresh operating system installs, and then restore data onto it. Therefore all affected servers will be taken offline one by one, re-installed and then data restored from our last set of backups which were run last weekend. This work will take place over this weekend, and you should expect a few hours of downtime whilst the work is done on your server.

One suggestion we have for customers who are on reseller plans or host multiple sites or important websites, is to migrate to your own VM(Virtual Machine), because operating within your own isolated environment offers greater protection for your websites in comparison to a shared hosting environment. Please contact us if you are interested in pursuing this solution.

A number of other web hosting companies have been hit with this hack recently, some of which have ended up going out of business. Whilst we will try our best to prevent this from happening again, it is the unfortunate reality of the online world that hackers will always find new and innovative ways to breach server security. A key action point for all customers is to ensure they always keep local backups of their data in the event of disasters.

So please sit tight and be patient as we try and overcome this situation. Everything should hopefully be back to normal after the weekend.
