I have changed everything as necessary and i can now access the index.php, however i dont think the rewrite rules and conditions are working - as links return 404 errors. the site is in php... any ideas?

Apache rewrite rules should be working fine via .htaccess files, whereas PHP directives require manipulation via a php.ini file.

If you are still experiencing errors, please submit a ticket and we'll have a look into it for you.

Yep sorry, i had left the php in the htaccess
